The Nigerian House of Representatives has stated that it will oppose any bill that seeks to legalize marijuana in the country.

When the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Buba Marwa, went before the House Committee on Narcotics for budget defense, Francis Agbo, the chairman of the House Committee on Narcotics, disclosed this development.

Agbo stated that the committee is considering amending the NDLEA bill to guarantee that the agency receives appropriate budget.

He also stated that the 9th Assembly will oppose any bill that seeks to legalize marijuana in Nigeria, and he urged for harsher penalties for drug dealers.

He said: “We are not supporting the so-called legitimization of Cannabis. This committee is not fronting for that bill, is not proposing that bill because we know very clearly that Nigeria is a heavy user of Cannabis,.

“So if there is so much madness, killings and so on in the country now, if we legitimize Cannabis, the madness would quadruple.”

Recall that Nigerian singer Burna Boy passed a statement that marijuana is yet to be legalised in Nigeria because of hypocrisy. According to him, “everybody does it, but no one wants to be the one that is seen talking about it.”

In other words, the US has warned that anyone found guilty of undermining the next Anambra governorship election on November 6 would not be granted a visa.

The US said on Wednesday, November 3 that individuals found guilty of inciting violence during or after the election will face immigration restrictions.

The United States says it will keep an eye on the process and hopes for a calm and transparent governorship election in the state.

“The United States looks forward to a gubernatorial election in Anambra State on November 6 that is peaceful and transparent, with results that accurately reflect the will of the state’s residents,” a statement by the US Mission in Nigeria reads.

“We will be paying close attention to actions of individuals who interfere with the democratic process or instigate violence against civilian populations before, during, or after the elections.

“We will not hesitate to consider consequences – including visa restrictions – for those found to be responsible for election-related violence or undermining the democratic process.

“Under U.S. immigration law, certain violations also may lead to restrictions on family members.

“We call on citizens, electoral officials, party members, and security force personnel to do their part in ensuring a credible and secure electoral process.”
